Art Club Workshop Today: Chihuly Chandelier

Art Club will meet today in room G5 after school from 3-4pm. Our project this month will be a Chihuly chandelier made of plastic bottles and tissue paper. This will be on display for our "Night of Art and Dr. Seuss" Show on May 24th.

This lesson came from the great Mr. E at Tulip Grove Elementary. We will try to make you proud Mr. E!

Art Club Bottle Cap Mosaic

After spending the entire school year collecting bottle caps, we have finally finished (well...almost finished) our bottle cap painting! This was inspired by Van Gogh's olive tree paintings, though it does not really look just like it like I had hoped. The kids absolutely loved making this. I couldn't find a super large canvas so I used four large square canvases we put together at the end. That turned out great because we got to divide up into groups and let a group work on a single canvas. I couldn't believe they got done in an hour!

I decided to hot glue the caps. When I did it myself it worked great, so I hope the kids put plenty of glue on them. We've already had a few fall off that we have had to reglue. But overall, I'm very happy with this project! I would love to do a large mural somewhere with bottle caps but we couldn't collect "quite" enough. I do have some saved aside for some smaller projects.

I absolutely can not wait to display this!!

Bottle Cap Painting- the beginning stages

This Monday Art Club will be putting together our bottle cap painting! This was originally going to be a mural but I just could not collect enough caps AND I couldn't quite find a spot that we could put a mural. I also had a hard time of coming up with exactly what our painting would be made of. I definitely wanted something art related. Starry Night is always a good go-to painting but it's been overdone. So I decided on another painting of Van Gogh- his olive trees!

And here is my sketch of the painting. I have 4 giant wood canvases I am going to divide it up into and maybe hot glue, or gorilla glue, the canvases together when the caps are installed. It will be interesting to see how we can obtain the famous textures of Van Gogh using caps.

My club is SO excited about this project! I can't wait till Monday!! :)

Art Club Bubble Painting

Our after school workshop today was called "bubble painting". This was another idea I stole from Pinterest. We bought cheap bubbles from Dollar General, filled them with different food colorings and blew bubbles onto white paper causing a cool abstract design. First and foremost, I can not tell you how much of a MESS I made getting the colored bubbles together. My hands are so stained right now I dread having to get all the coloring off! But they had a blast with this! It definitely is messy but it's manageable. No messier than regular painting. Be sure to tell them to blow slowly and also that if they get too close to the paper, the bubbles WILL splash in their face, giving them colored freckles. hahahah!

Art Club in January.....

Starting in January, Art Club will be designing and building the set for MJMS's spring musical.....*drum roll*

 

Seussical!!!! As a life-time lover of Dr. Seuss I am THRILLED to be building and designing the set for this play with my middle school art-eests. The handful of Art Club kids I told are stoked just as much as I am. This will be a wonderful way or us to get more involved in our school by using our creativity and art skills. As of now I know we will be painting a backdrop as well as making several fish props. I would love to make the fluffy trees that you see in The Lorax but I don't need to get too ahead of myself. :)

These past few weeks have been absolutely slammed. Grading, makeup work, Christmas shopping, you name it,it has been wild here! I spent a GOOD all day yesterday cleaning out and reorganizing my classroom and also making my unit for this next upcoming semester. So far I have the first THREE months planned out! (I can hardly believe it....).

November Art Club Workshop-- Bookmaking

We had our November workshop today after school where we learned a simple pamphlet stitch from book making. I wish that I had a lot more accessories to give them to decorate their books. All the had was construction paper, markers and crayons. Some of the girls brought some cute things to add, but when I do this in the future I will make sure to have a variety of patterns, beads, stickers, etc. 

We dropped insanely with our numbers. During the melting crayon workshop we had WELL over 50+ kids and it was a nightmare trying to get all those paintings done. Today we had about 30 which was a great size, but I do hope more continue to join!

And the stabbing the spine begins! I was so happy when I realized we could use the cracks of the cafeteria tables to give them room to stick holes in the spine. How helpful!!!

A lot of the students finished several in the time of our meeting. This was overall a great lesson for Art Club. I definitely plan on doing more bookmaking lessons. The next time I do this, I will bring bigger paper so they can make much bigger books. I definitely need to be taking a lot more pictures, I feel like I get so overwhelmed during Art Club meetings. Maybe I should *try* letting some of my members take pictures for me? :)

Aaaaaaaaaaand to top off the end of a good day, a stop at Marble Slab Creamery. I've never been to one of these until today.. WHERE HAVE I BEEN ALL MY LIFE??? CHEESECAKE ICE CREAM, I mean COME ON.

November Art Club Workshop- Book Making

We had our monthly morning meeting in Art Club today where we discuss our monthly workshop. For the month of November, we will be doing book making. This is one of my favorite things is bookmaking. I took a college class over it and fell in LOVE. What is great is that there are soooo many things you can do when it comes to making your book unique and more "you".

When: Wednesday, November 28th

What time: 3:00-4:30pm

What will I need to bring?: Everything will be provided for you to create our simple stitch book! Here are some wonderful optional things you can bring that will make your book look extra unique:
-scrapbook paper
-stickers
-stamps
-pictures

Where: MJMS cafeteria

Upcoming Art Club Workshop-- Melting Crayons!

Welcome back to MJMS! I hope everybody has a wonderful fall break. I know I did! :)

Art Club will be having our first after school workshop on Tuesday, October 23rd. It will be from 3:00 - 4:30pm. Students, please make arrangements with your parents to be picked up at 4:30!!!

We will be doing our melting crayon project!!! Here is what each student is expected to bring:

1. Canvas from either Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby or Joann's Fabric
**If this is your first time trying this project, do not go big-- go smaller.

2. Towel you don't mind getting wax all over.

3. Hair dryer (one hair dryer can be shared between 2-3 students)

4. Box of crayons

We will be meeting in room G5 in "the basement". Parents can drive around to our back door to pick up students at 4:30.
